History Skills
Chronology
Learning Objectives
• To identify key terms describing time.
• To describe the difference between BCE and CE.
• To give names to centuries.
• To position events into chronological order.
What is Chronology?
Chronology is the arrangement of events or dates in the order of their occurrence.
Timelines
A timeline is a visual representation of time showing a sequence of related historical events in chronological order.
Please see the example below showing a simplified timeline of World War One.

How are centuries counted?
It seems complicated at first but the first century CE begins with the year 1 and terminates with the year 100CE.
The second century begins with the year 101 an terminates with the year 200 and continues in that fashion.
This is why the century always seems one ahead what you might think it is.
For instance 1550 is in the 16th century and 1865 is in the 19th century.

Scientific Dating Methods
Relative Dating
Dendrochronology
Dendrochronology is tree-ring dating. Each ring represents one year; the outside rings, near the bark, are the youngest and the ones in the centre are the oldest. We can count the rings to determine the age of a tree or a piece of wood.
Carbon 14 Dating Method
Optically-stimulated Luminescence Dating
Optically-stimulated luminescence dating method can be used to determine the date of artefacts that are buried in a particular layer of sediment. To this they take grains of sand from the layer of sediment in which the bone or artefact was found and use radiation measures to determine how long since it was last exposed to sunlight. We can therefore determine how long since the grains of sand and the artefacts were buried. This is a reasonably accurate scientific dating method.
The moment a grain of sand is not exposed to sunlight the clock starts ticking.
